A petition to exclude Donald Trump from the United Kingdom has reached a record breaking amount of signatures as residents attempt to have him blocked from entering the country.
With more than 470,000 signatures the petition broke the parliamentary website record, and The Petitions Committee is due to to discuss the petition on January 5th. A rival petition to allow the presidential candidate entry to the country has received over 20,000 signatures.
The petition came after Trump said he thought Muslims shouldn’t be allowed entry to the USA, and swiftly after he was stripped of his honorary degree by Robert Gordon University, Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon dropped him as a business ambassador. She has also backed the petition to consider excluding Trump.
Robert Gordon University have said that Trump’s statements about Muslims were “wholly incompatible” with their ethos, and a Scottish government spokeswoman said that Trump’s “recent remarks have shown that he is no longer fit to be a business ambassador for Scotland.”
Trump released a statement saying that “The United Kingdom is trying hard to disguise their massive Muslim problem. Everybody is wise to what is happening. Very sad. Be honest
Despite Trump’s contributions to Scotland including his investment in the £200m redevelopment of Turnberry Resort and the building of Trump International Golf Links, Scotland. it is unclear where Trump now stands in the redevelopment, after making his dismay clear about the situation when he said “If they – Nicola Sturgeon and RGU – were going to do this, they should have informed me prior to my major investment in this £200m development, which will totally revitalise that vast region of Scotland.
“The UK politicians should be thanking me instead of pandering to political correctness.”
