Although it is now one of the largest issues the U.K government is currently having to face, a lot of its residents still aren’t entirely sure on how the crisis begun and what has happened between its start and now.

The original cause of the current crisis was the Arab Spring. This was a revolutionary change in the Arab world which involved protests, both peaceful and violent and often ended in governments being overthrown after lengthy battles between civilian rebels and government forces.

Due to the violent protests many countries’ governments responded with great force with many innocent civilians being killed as well as having their homes destroyed.

It is because of this that has caused so many millions to no longer feel safe in their own country and to flee or attempt to flee to safer countries in the surrounding areas.

Luckily many neighbouring countries were welcoming to the refugees, with Turkey and other countries such as Lebanon and Iraq opening up camps by the end of 2011 to give somewhere for the first group of refugees to escape to.

over 200,000 confirmed casualties

Since 2011 however the situation has inevitably worsened, with over 200,000 confirmed casualties, over 50% of which are believed to be civilians and an estimated 3 million refugees already having left the country seeking refuge and safety mainly in Lebanon, Jordan and Turkey.

As fighting and air strikes continue, the situation will only worsen for those living in Syria and pressures will grow on the surrounding countries as their resources are stretched to cope with the ever growing number of helpless people.
