Children left behind: raising awareness at the EU level
One of the biggest problems surrounding children left behind has been the lack of awareness and sensitivity to the issue in Europe. Until 2008, only countries where the phenomenon was widespread and common, such as Poland and Romania, recognised it as a social problem and took action.
Since then, the EU has taken notice and made recommendations. Still, the union itself does not take specific measures to help children left behind in the European countries, as they mainly fall within the competence of the member states.
Below is a timeline showing how the issue has been raised at the EU level.
