According to a study conducted by WHO in 2021, sub-Saharan Africa has the highest rates of gender-based violence cases, with some countries having one in two women suffering from intimate partner abuse.

Jean-Paul Murunga, a gender-violence researcher for Equality Now, explains how social factors can influence the rates of sexual assault and why this makes it prominent in some sub-Saharan African countries.
