Saint Nicholas and Black Pete: Tradition or Racism?
For over hundred of years, Dutch children have been celebrating the birthday of a Saint that is known for his kindness, generosity and love for children. You might have heard from this Saint indirectly because he was the inspiration for the figure Santa Claus. Not much unlike the elves that help Santa Claus with the preparations and wrapping the presents. Saint Nicholas has helpers too, they are called Black Pete’s. However, the exterior of these helpers has caused a heated debate in the Netherlands over the last decades and is now more fiery than ever.
Having grown up in the Netherlands, but having spent my adult live in the United Kingdom, I returned to the Netherlands and have a look at this festival from a new point of view.
