REPORTING TO THE POLICE : NOT THE ONLY SOLUTION

Most women living in domestic abuse refuse to seek help because they instantly think that their partner will be arrested; which is what most are trying to avoid, so they suffer in silence.

There are services in place where women can go that will not involve their partner getting arrested.

The Citizens Advice Bureau is one of many places that women can go to seek advice without having to report their partner.

There are also drop-in services that are run by domestic abuse charities where women living in abuse can go and talk to someone, without being judged

Women can receive advice about how to cope if they don’t want to leave (but most high-risk case situations are likely to be reported e.g. if a woman is in danger of death).

Some women’s refuges also can help women leave a domestic abuse situation without the perpetrator aware of any initial plans of leaving.

Most women are scared to go talk to someone in fear of embarrassment or are worried that they will be pressured into reporting their partner.

Services, such as drop-ins, however, are confidential and no woman is forced to take any action that she does not want to.

Services from charities such as the Samaritans, can be through the phone and don’t have to be face to face contact, and they don’t have to reveal their identity of personal information.
